The Sleeping Sagas

Before the time of maps and men, there were the mountains. They are the sleeping giants of the north, their spines of granite and gneiss holding the memory of creation itself. To walk among them is to step into a forgotten saga. Every twisted birch tree is a wizened old storyteller, every mist-shrouded peak a fortress for a king who never was, and every stream sings a song of forgotten magic.

Through my lens, I seek not just to capture a landscape, but to reveal the epic that slumbers within it. This gallery is a collection of portals—glimpses into a world that feels both real and dreamlike, where every shadow could hide a secret and every horizon promises an adventure. Look closely, and perhaps you will hear the mountains' story, too.

General Facts about the Swedish Mountains

  • The Scandinavian Mountains: The primary mountain range in Sweden is called the Scandinavian Mountains (Skanderna), also known as the Scandes. This range runs for approximately 1,700 kilometers (about 1,060 miles) along the border between Sweden and Norway, making it one of the longest ranges in Europe.

  • Ancient Origins: Unlike younger ranges like the Alps, the Scandinavian Mountains are incredibly old. They were formed around 400 million years ago during the Caledonian orogeny, a continental collision. The landscape we see today was heavily sculpted by the last Ice Age, which carved out deep U-shaped valleys and sharp peaks.

  • Location: The vast majority of Sweden's mountains are located in the northern regions of the country, primarily within the provinces of Lapland, Jämtland, and Härjedalen.

Sweden's Highest Peak: A Story of Climate Change

  • Kebnekaise: Sweden's highest mountain is Kebnekaise. It has two main peaks: a southern peak covered by a glacier (Sydtoppen) and a northern, ice-free peak (Nordtoppen).

  • A Melting Peak: For decades, the glaciated southern peak was the highest point in Sweden. However, due to rising global temperatures, the glacier has been melting.

  • The North Peak is Now Highest: In August 2019, for the first time in recorded history, the northern peak was measured to be taller. As the southern peak's glacier continues to shrink each summer, the ice-free northern peak is now officially recognized as Sweden's highest point, standing at 2,096.8 meters (6,879 feet) above sea level.

Recreation and Famous Trails

  • The King's Trail (Kungsleden): Sweden is home to one of the world's most famous hiking trails, Kungsleden. It stretches over 440 kilometers (270 miles) between Abisko in the north and Hemavan in the south, passing through stunning national parks.

  • Europe's Last Wilderness: The mountains contain vast, untouched areas. Sarek National Park is particularly famous for being considered "Europe's last wilderness," with no trails, cabins, or amenities, offering a true challenge for experienced adventurers.

  • Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten): A key part of Swedish culture, this law allows anyone to hike, camp, and enjoy the mountains freely and respectfully, as long as they do not disturb or destroy the natural environment.

Homeland of the Sámi

  • Sápmi: The mountain regions of northern Sweden are the traditional homeland of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Scandinavia. This area, which also spans Norway, Finland, and Russia, is known as Sápmi.

  • Reindeer Husbandry: The mountains are central to Sámi culture and are vital for traditional reindeer herding. The reindeer migrate between lowland forests in the winter and the mountains in the summer, a cycle that has continued for centuries.

Wildlife and Nature

  • The Treeline: A distinct feature of the Swedish mountains is the treeline, above which trees cannot grow. This barren, tundra-like landscape is known as the kalfjäll ("bald mountain").

  • Iconic Animals: The mountains are home to unique and protected wildlife, including the Arctic fox, wolverine, lynx, and large birds of prey like the Golden Eagle. Brown bears and moose are more common in the forested valleys below the peaks.
